Sphalerite is quite common in the mines of Alston Moor, but only occasionally do specimens from Scraithole mine come on the market. The mine was worked for a short while in the 1970's and this specimen was collected then. The sphalerite is gemmy, the smaller crystals are red and transparent whilst the larger crystals are jet-black and up to 9mm in size.
