Barite

Dirtlow Rake, Castleton, Derbyshire, England

2787

Dirtlow Rake was a prolific producer of specimens whilst being worked for fluorite and barytes in the 1970's and 1980's. It is now landscaped and grassed over. Occasionally a form of stalagtitic barite occurred and this is the most skeletal specimen i have had of this unusual type and as far as i know unique to Dirtlow.  The specimen consists of numerous intergrown stalagmites some with a central hole around which there are roughly circular bands of different coloured barite.
