A Calcite specimen from a rare and interesting location, Hodbarrow mine worked a rich deposit of hematite but being on the coast the threat of inudation by the sea was always a danger. Its full history is well documented in 'Cumberland Iron-The story of Hodbarrow mine 1855-1968' by A Harris. This specimen of blocky calcite crystals formed over an iron rich limestone was collected in the 1960s. Ex. Richard Braithwaite collection.
