Beryl - Cesium rich variety

Deo Darrah, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan

1996

In 2012 a small one-off find of a blue beryl was made in Afghanistan. It's unusual habit in thin hexagonal blue plates and chemical analysis lead some to believe it to be vorobyevite although the concensus of opinion now is that it is just a cesium rich variety of beryl. The matrix of this specimen consists of large dark blue part beryl crystals within which a small cavity has filled with small sharp beryl crystals with a distinctive 'sandwich' appearance, the middle being dark blue, the outer layers light blue.  Very attractive
