Fluorite

East Greenlaws mine, Daddry Shield, Weardale, Co. Durham, England

1414

Occasionally these 'floater' crystals are found at the mine with no contact points. It is thought these are formed by having fallen from the cavity roof during some past tectonic movement and then further crystal development has taken place as later fluids entered the cavity whilst the specimen lay on the cavity bottom. On most of these floaters from Greenlaws there is a perceptable colour change between the two periods of crystal growth.
